This solar powered sign was originally designed to be comletely off the grid. Located on Central Avenue (Old route 66) in Albuquerque, New Mexico, it used photovoltaic panels and six batteries to power the lights that illuminate the sign. Because the betteries frequently faulted and because of the environmental costs associated with diposing the batteries, the sign was retrofited back into the grid with the owner receiving credit for the electricity produced by the sign.
